What is an NPI Type I and Type II?

The National Provider Identifier or NPI is a 10 digit number used for both a provider and a business, so that they can be identified for all HIPAA transactions. Everyone who qualifies for a number will need to have one in order to be paid by Medicare or other health plans.

The Type I NPI identifies a provider or individual. You will keep this number throughout your career (regardless of where you work) and will be necessary to file claims and other transactions with insurances and Medicare.

The Type II NPI identifies an organization. If you are a provider who owns a corporation, it is likely that you will need both the Type I and Type II NPI numbers.

NPI’s can also be used to separate locations under the same Tax ID Number (TIN). This is helpful for the insurances to quickly identify the entity. If you have clinics with separate locations AND separate TIN’s then you will need a NPI for each TIN.
