Start the New Year Right By Avoiding These Provider Enrollment Mistakes

Becoming a provider with government and commercial insurance companies is vital for any health care provider that wants to solidify and grow their practice.

But there are mistakes that you can make that will slow or halt the enrollment process and even jeopardize your cash flow.

Here are the most common provider enrollment mistakes to avoid:

  • Providing incomplete information. The most common mistake when enrolling with providers is submitting applications without the necessary details. This practice will lead to delays, potential denials and rejection of your applications. Be sure that you supply any and all information requested with each application. Ask another staff member to double-check and review applications for accuracy and completeness.
  • Not following up. Don’t get lost in the incredible payer processing backlog – contact each provider to make sure that your application was received. Keep following up at regular intervals – call, email and check web and network directories. Take notes on each contact and attempted contact so you have a trail of your actions. Even if your application is missing information or if there is a delay, the provider will not contact you. It’s up to you!
  • Weak planning. Make sure that you plan for plenty of time for the payer enrollment process – at least 90 days, although 120 days or more may be typical for some carriers.
  • Underestimating the strict guidelines of government payers. Provider enrollment in Medicare, Tricare, Medicaid and other government programs is different from that of commercial carriers. Typical mistakes made with government payers include using the wrong or outdated form, incomplete submission, using a business name that does not match IRS records, not submitting data such as banking information and not signing the application.

As you can see, the provider enrollment process is lengthy, complicated and time-consuming. We can help you with each phase of the provider enrollment process for commercial carriers as well as all government plans. Give us a call to relieve your staff of this administrative burden!
