New Guidelines Issued for Unlicensed Resident Provider Enrollment
In a recent MLN Matters®communication, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced updated guidelines for processing enrollment applications for unlicensed residents.
The notice applies to unlicensed resident physicians who need to enroll in the Medicare program through Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) and to the providers for whom these residents plan to practice.
How Enrollment Works for Unlicensed Residents
Effective no later than June 17, 2018, Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) will process CMS Form 8550 provider enrollment applications that are submitted for unlicensed residents if the application submission includes either:
A residency contract signed and dated by an official of the institution and the resident physician, or
A letter presented on institution letter and confirming the applicant’s status as a resident physician. This letter must contain, at a minimum, the name of the applicant and must be signed and dated by an official of the institution.
The enrollment will be approved by MACs if the applicant provides the abovementioned proof of residency and passes all screening requirements.
Your MAC may have more information concerning this requirement should you have any questions. Check this CMS website to find your MAC by your state.
