Indiana Physician Assistants Must Enroll Independently With Medicaid
Starting September 1, 2018, all physician assistants (PAs) who want to provide services under Indiana Medicaid must enroll as providers independently. They are no longer able to be billed under a supervising physician’s NPI.
This new Indiana Health Coverage Programs (IHCP) policy was previously announced with an effective date of August 1, 2017. However, last month an IHCP bulletin reported the new effective date of September 1, 2018.
IHCP eligible providers are being expanded to include professionally-licensed PAs. PAs must enroll independently to be eligible for reimbursement. The change brings billing for PAs into alignment with billing for other non-physician providers.
In order to enroll, PAs must have a National Provider Identifier (NPI) and hold a valid professional license. They are eligible to enroll as billing providers and as rendering providers in the case of a group practice. Submit enrollment applications using the IHCP Provider Healthcare Portal or via the appropriate provider enrollment packet.
For services dated on or after September 1, 2018, fee-for-services claims submitted for PA services must be billed using the PA’s NPE rather than that of the supervising physician.
You can learn more about how the new policy will affect PA enrollment and billing with Indiana Medicaid in the original IHCP bulletin dated June 29, 2017.
